More about the Softball Skills Clinic Philosophy
All great players and all great teams have one thing in common. They execute the fundamental components of the game
excellently. After coaching Varsity High School softball for many years, I have realized that any player can increase her ability to
excel and certainly enhance her teams chances of winning by learning, practicing and understanding the fundamentals of the
game. It does not take an exceptionally gifted athlete to play the game well under pressure situations. It takes a player who is
confident, composed and prepared to make the play. She is successful because she has been through the situation before
in practice and is not "surprised" by it in a game.
After speaking with many parents whose children are in fastpitch softball leagues, it seems that many players would like a
comprehensive clinic focusing on two major factors. First, they would like to improve upon the "little things" that are important
toward success in the game. Things like throwing, defensive footwork at the bases, base running, hitting, bunting, rundowns,
relays, fielding groundballs, fielding flyballs, tracking , backing up plays, communication and stealing. Second, they would like
to improve their daughters knowledge of the game. Specifically, know what to do offensively and defensively in certain game
situations. Of course, these situations are best learned when they are rehearsed or practiced again and again so that the
situation feels natural. We will accomplish this in our upcoming Skills Clinic by incorporating the "little things" in game
situations.
The Skills Clinic will begin by focusing on the "little things" and move on toward challenging them with game situations. The
end result is having the player identify a certain game situation whether she is on offense or defense and react accordingly
when the ball is in play.
